Model One

Tinea and Leah: [Cyberpunk, Alien Incursions, Murder and Mayhem, Girl's Love (WLW)]

Model One is an Antithesis creature distinguished in the evidence by its single-digit classification, overwhelming numbers, and intimate participation in nest life. It appears not merely as an anonymous enemy unit but as an organism guided by smell, reproduction, feeding, and collective judgment. At the same time, the Vanguard combat interface reduces its death to a reward value, creating a sharp contrast between the creature's own biological world and the human-facing logic of targets eliminated and points earned.

Classification and Battlefield Presence

Model One belongs to the single-digit Antithesis models. During one attack, AI-I counted a fresh wave moving toward a clearing and recorded 200 Model Ones, alongside 86 Model Threes and 12 Model Fours. The figures establish Model One as a mass-deployed combatant rather than a rare specialist: its tactical importance lies partly in how many can arrive at once.

That numerical abundance also shapes the rhythm of combat. After a localized meteor storm, about fifty Model Threes remained, together with several Model Fours and two badly burnt Model Eights; the surviving Model Ones are not individually highlighted in that aftermath, reinforcing the contrast between the numerous lower models and the more conspicuous, more durable forms. Elsewhere, the remaining Ones are numerous enough to tempt a fighter to spray them with recycled ammunition, though ammunition scarcity makes resupply more important than spending every remaining round.

Scent, Feeding, and Nest Life

The clearest account of Model One comes through a shift into Antithesis perception beneath the ramp leading into New Montreal's megacity proper, in Saint-Eustache. A creature detects meat-food by scent, freezing with its nose raised and drawing air through the tissue between nose and mouth so that the air reaches its alien taste buds. Its three-hinged jaw opens to taste more of the surrounding atmosphere. The description makes smell, rather than sight or language, the organizing medium of its experience.

When the food smells good, the creature's associations lead it back toward home-place, birth-wood, safety, and eating pools. It seizes a large piece of food and drags it through a crack, then follows familiar trails associated with pack hunts and prey threats. Its glands mark the route with repeated food signals, turning scent into both a navigational system and a message to other members of the nest.

At home-place, newly emerged young fall from opened birth-fluid sacks near the birth-wood. Other creatures approach and smell them; the newborns remain still while the adults assess whether they smell right. The returning creature joins the inspection before moving to the next batch. This scene presents the nest as a sensory society in which belonging is verified chemically and reproduction is embedded in collective behavior.

The inspection also has a lethal boundary. One newborn fails to remain still, repeatedly scrabbling upright and falling over. Although it smells like the other creatures, it also smells wrong: sick and badly grown. The returning creature releases its food, attacks the malformed offspring, and tears it apart; the other creatures join in and destroy it rapidly. Model One's nest ethics therefore combine recognition and exclusion, with communal survival expressed through immediate physical violence against what the group identifies as defective.

Interaction with Vanguard Systems

Model One is encountered through a battlefield increasingly mediated by nonhuman systems. Tynea can manage the administrative burden of combat, while the Sentinel's automatic fire and guided trigger allow the Vanguard to direct a weapon without manually handling every decision. A combat report records 420 targets eliminated, and a separate Foxteeth report records 33 rounds fired and 60 kills over 16 seconds. These figures do not identify every victim as Model One, but they show the numerical environment in which the Ones function: Antithesis bodies are converted into rapid statistics, ammunition calculations, and point returns.

The weapons architecture is also designed around distributed agency. Smart-fire missiles can avoid a lure rather than destroying it accidentally, and networked weapons can be sensed and coordinated through the Quanta. Model One therefore occupies one node in a larger action network linking Tinea, Tynea, AI-I, weapons, ammunition, and targeting rules. The creature's own coordinated nest behavior is mirrored, in hostile form, by the Vanguard's computational coordination of weapons.

Tynea's role is explicitly delegated rather than merely decorative. The Vanguard asks whether Tynea can be trusted to handle command debugging during a fight, and Tynea accepts that responsibility; later, the Vanguard again leaves administrative work to Tynea while preparing the Myriad. The resulting combat system places Model One at the receiving end of decisions made across a chain of human, artificial, and mechanical actors. Its death can be caused by a weapon, selected by a program, enabled by network awareness, and finally translated into a score.

Numerical Value and Narrative Significance

The strongest reduction of Model One to game logic appears in the reward display after a later attack: one Model One is assigned a reward of 1120. In the same display, 86 Model Threes produce 9770 points and 12 Model Fours produce 9315. The reward system thus treats model classification as an economic category. A Model One is not only a creature or enemy; it is also a unit of measurable value within the Vanguard's point economy.

That calculation sits uneasily beside the earlier nest scene. From the creature's perspective, food, birth, scent, illness, and communal killing form a complete world. From the Vanguard interface's perspective, the same kind of being is a line item with a reward attached. The evidence does not erase either view. Instead, it places them beside one another: one reveals Model One as a living participant in a multispecies ecology, while the other shows how the war's systems transform that life into ammunition expenditure, target counts, and points.

Model One consequently represents the Antithesis at its most abundant and systemically legible. Its mass presence makes it useful to battlefield arithmetic, but its sensory narration prevents it from remaining a mere statistic. The creature's ability to recognize food, return to a birth-place, inspect newborns, and enforce nest boundaries gives the lowest-numbered model a biological interiority that complicates the Vanguard's otherwise efficient language of elimination.
